The Differences Between Us...

Hello everyone! I hope you have had a fantastic week. This week I wanted to talk about something that is not always talked about openly. During our day and age men and women don’t like to admit to the differences between them. Sometimes our differences can be seen as weakness rather than strengths. I believe however, that it is through the differences between men and women that we are able to find our greatest strength when we work together. We also don't always like to mention our similarities, but it is through those similarities that we can find common ground to build our relationships.

Now today's definition of men and women can be a little shaky. Let me start off by saying that I don’t want to argue about this. Everyone has the right to their own opinion but for this article I will be using the traditional definition of men and women. What they were in the beginning. There have always been differences between men and women. It's what makes humanity what it is today. Back when humans were just getting started the men were generally hunters while the women were gatherers as well as took care of the children. Men were the providers and the protectors while women helped to provide but they also nurtured the coming generation. Now I'm not saying that the relationship between men and women was always fair. Women definitely deserve the chance to earn the same wages and have the same opportunities as men. But isn't there a limit to where it is fair and where men can genuinely do the job better? If a man has a better resume than a woman does, shouldn't he deserve the job more than the woman? Should we lower our standards for things that keep countries and cities safe just so that women can have jobs in this field as well? An example of this could be that in some states they have lowered the requirements for firefighters to be hired so that women are able to get the job. Even when there are a few women who are able to complete the harder requirements. I'm not saying that we should outlaw women from being firefighters, but I do think that when it comes to the safety of our families and our children we should make sure that we will be safe by keeping high standards.

Do we ever switch roles? Do we ever hire a man over a woman who has a better resume? History says we have done this and this is why we women fought for the freedoms that we have today in the United States. Aren't we backtracking into history if we do the exact same thing to men? Men and Women should be treated equally, but there are some things that we are simply not equal in. For example, did you know that generally speaking women are far more detail oriented than men? Generally women are able to notice how something sounds, smells, or looks, whereas men are not as likely to even notice it. Something that men are generally better at is spatial orientation. So they are a lot better at knowing where they are directionally. How would these differences affect the workforce? How would being better at spatial orientation help men with a job? Maybe if a man were in a burning building he would better be able to find his way out amid the chaos, while a woman on the outskirts who is better at noticing things would be better able to help those who are wounded, or might not have been noticed if she wasn't there. These roles are both important for the job to be done but they are different. If we as a society normalized our differences being a good thing, maybe the world could become a better place where women and men are treated equally while fulfilling roles where their individual differences can make a positive impact.

Now I'm not saying that this would always be the best for all men and women. There are always exceptions. In general though there are differences between men and women which divide and strengthen us. Women and Men should be treated equally but there is a point when we are not being equal or fair. When we use our differences we will be able to make a difference. We will be able to make the world a better place. Women don't need to have all the qualities of men, and men don't need to have all the qualities of women. Because when we work together we will be able to learn from our differences. It is our differences that make us stronger. If everyone was the same, the world would be a pretty boring place.

I hope I have not offended anyone. If you have any questions or thoughts of your own please add them. I love learning from your experiences.
